Pointers for a artist statement

Have a good opening sentence.

Be clear, precise and engaging.

Try to capture the visual nature of work.

Have a friend proofread it for you and have someone there with you.

Keep it fresh and up to date.

Try to keep it at page length if it’s too long people will lose interest.

what is the point of an artist statement?

To give the viewer a better understanding of your work.

It describes sources and inspirations.

Provides a general philosophy of how and why you make the art you do.

It can be all inclusive of your work or it can focus on a specific body of work.

It should be 2 paragraphs minimum or one-page long maximum.

Example of Artist statement

My drawings, prints and sculpture transform discarded materials into meditation on healing superstition and protection. My work references black folk art and uses repetitive and labour-intensive visual arts to create affirmations of black history and identity. My newest project called Eyes Over Harlem includes a series of prints made form onions and medical herbs, thousand of black-eyed peas assembled in a wall drawing and a floor to ceiling column of copper pennies.

The anatomy of the CV

YOUR NAME- this should be nice and clear; this is your opportunity to show your skills and personality.

CONTACT- Choose an easy and professional email address. If your CV looks to flat, you can add some symbols. Add in your blog, website, Instagram addresses and links etc…

PROFILE-The profile should be short if you have already got relevant professional experiences then state it.  If not, your profile should show your personality and creativity.

THE STYLE -Less is more, is best as any distraction will make your CV harder to read. If you are more adventurous you can try something different but be careful to not over do it. Also check everything and make sure the layout is well balanced.

SKILLS-This is important, you need to look at the job description and highlight the skills that apply to you.

INTEREST-Do not put your interest if they are not interested. Be specific and relevant, blog writing, part of a club, coding or programming or coaching.

AWARDS AND ACHEIVMENTS-Has your work been published or in a magazine? Have you exhibited your work anywhere?

EXPERIENCE-Put your most recent experience first. Show how you developed your skills and what you achieved.

EDUCATION-if the most relevant thing about you is that you have been a student then start with your education. Put the most recent first, you will need to put the date, title of the course and the location.

It is important to have a good idea of what a CV should look like and what to put in if you want to get into a job that you want. If possible, you should add some images of your awards/ achievements.

Profile

I am a reliable, self-motivated, enthusiastic, responsible and hard-working person. I am also a mature team worker and I am adaptable to all challenging situations. I can work well both in a team environment as well as using my own initiative. I can work under pressure and meet strict deadlines.

About me

I am a BA fine artist graduate from London. I grew up in Letchworth Garden City however I moved to the city to study my course and divulge myself in the great design they have here in London. I am fully British, but I want to travel to open up my eye of the other cultures of art in other countries. I have a college diploma and once finished I decided that I wanted to take it further and get a BA from university. I am currently in the process of finding out what it is like to become a curator as that is my main interest.
